Orthographic Analysis

2.3 The Conduct of Orthographic Analysis

Prologue

To be valid, all analytical activity must conform the immutable reference point of rigorously established orthographic fact. Those linguistic verities are neither negotiable nor open to compromise; any analysis that does not conform to them is unsafe. Only tutors who are competent orthographers can also be competent analysers of misspelling.

What is open to discussion is how each of us realizes these orthographic facts in our teaching activity and discourse. I refuse to treat you as some sort of marionette by providing a catalogue of mechanical instructions or set script to follow. It is up to you to decide how you will interact with orthographic fact in your own way according to your own lights.

I am, though, honour bound to share with you suggestions that are examples of how I myself try to conduct real orthographic analysis.
