Matrix Builder: User Instructions
Matrix Builder helps you create a Structured Word Inquiry matrix from word sums. It does not decide whether your analysis is correct. You must check the morphology yourself.
This is an update of the fantastic Matrix Maker, posted here with permission, that Neil Ramsden created for us so long ago, and which many of us depend on. You can see more of his SWI work and other projects here.
You should read the instructions below to get a full sense of the tool (that's why we put the link to it at the bottom - IKEA-thinking 😇). But for a quick start, here is a video from Pete showing the major features. Thanks so much, Pete!
Matrix Builder helps students enter word sums, build a matrix for one word family, and collect morphemic elements in a cumulative chart. The tool organizes what students enter; it does not decide whether an analysis is correct.
Start a matrix
- Enter the Word Family Base and click the checkmark.
- Optional: enter the denotation and root information, clicking the checkmark for each.
- The main base appears automatically in the Word Sum Builder and cannot be edited there.
- Click a word-sum box, then use the prefix, base, suffix, or vowel buttons to set its type.
- Use the small + buttons to add element boxes to the left or right.
Enter word sums
- Click an editable box in the Word Sum Builder.
- Type the element, or click an element in the Morphemic Elements Chart to insert it.
- Enter the final word after the arrow if desired.
- Click the checkmark to add the word sum.
Duplicate word sums are ignored. Word sums are kept alphabetized. Clicking a saved word sum loads it for editing. Clicking the red × while editing removes that word sum.
Bulk import
Use Bulk Import to add several word sums at once, one per line. Accepted formats include:
sign + al + edsign + al + ed → signaled
Every imported line must contain the current main base.
Matrix view
Matrix View shows the current word family matrix. Prefixes appear to the left of the base and suffixes to the right. Related paths are grouped when possible. Secondary bases are bolded and separated visually from other elements in a cell. Root information appears below the matrix.
Morphemic Elements Chart view
Use Show Elements Chart / Show Matrix to switch the large display area between the current matrix and the cumulative chart.
The chart is cumulative. It gathers elements from all word sums and confirmed bases, not just the current matrix.
- Affixes includes prefixes, suffixes, and connecting vowel letters.
- Prefixes are collected from elements marked as prefixes.
- Suffixes are divided into consonant suffixes and vowel suffixes according to the first letter.
- Connecting vowel letters are fixed entries only: Latin
-e-,-i-,-u-; Greek-o-. - Bases are collected from the current Word Family Base and any other elements marked as bases.
Chart sections avoid duplicates and stay alphabetized. Prefixes and bases display in two columns to save space.
Use chart elements in word sums
Click an editable box in the Word Sum Builder, then click a chart element. The element is inserted into the selected box and the box type is set appropriately. Chart clicks do not create new boxes; use the + buttons when another box is needed.
Delete or select chart elements
Each collected chart element has two controls beside it:
- × deletes that element from the cumulative chart only.
- The small circle selects that element for a reduced chart.
Deleting from the chart does not delete anything from existing word sums or matrices. After selecting any number of elements, use Chart from Selected to remake the chart with only those selected elements. A warning appears first to remind users to save the full chart before reducing it.
Save and export the current matrix
In Matrix View, the toolbar applies to the current matrix investigation.
- Export Data: saves the current matrix investigation as JSON.
- Import Data: loads a saved matrix investigation JSON file.
- Save Word Sums: saves the current word-sum list as a text file.
- Save as PDF: saves the current matrix as a PDF.
- Save as JPG: saves the current matrix as a JPG.
- Clear All: clears the current matrix investigation and word sums.
Save and export the elements chart
In Chart View, the toolbar changes to chart-specific actions.
- Export Chart Data: saves the cumulative chart as JSON.
- Import Chart Data: loads a saved chart JSON file.
- Save Chart Text: saves the chart contents as a text file.
- Save Chart PDF: saves the full chart as a PDF.
- Save Chart JPG: saves the full chart as a JPG.
- Save Section PDF: saves only the prefixes, suffixes, or bases section as a PDF.
- Clear Chart: clears the collected chart elements, but not the fixed connecting vowel letters.
Local saving
The app uses browser local storage so work can remain available on the same computer and browser. Export JSON files when work needs to be moved, backed up, or shared.
Reminders
- The app does not check the accuracy of a word sum or matrix.
- Matrix View is for the current word family investigation.
- The Elements Chart is cumulative and independent from the current matrix.
- Deleting from the chart does not change existing word sums.
- Before using Chart from Selected, save the full chart if it should be preserved.
